Former E.W. Scripps Co. CEO William Burleigh, former CEO John Peppeer and co-founder Janet Reid will take part in theluncheomn series, called By the Book. Reid will go firsgt April 9, with "The Phoenix Principles," which she co-wrot e with V. Randolph Brown. The book's messagwe is that diversity is abusiness imperative. On Aprill 26, Pepper, now the CEO of the , will discus "Crossing to Safety" by Wallacse Stegner or "Self Renewal: The Individual and the Innovativ Society" by John Gardner. In an e-mail Pepper said he hasn't picked one yet.
"Crossinfg to Safety" is a story about two young couples who meet duringy the Depression and form alifelony friendship. "Self Renewal" discusses the need to innovatwe in orderto thrive. "'Crossinf to Safety' is probably my favoritre novel for the insights Stegner brings to the challenge and beauty ofhuman relationships," Peppe r said in the e-mail. Gardnerf is one of Pepper's favorite writers on the subjecf of leadership andpersonal "He has written many wonderful books, but 'Sel f Renewal' would be my favorite," he said.
On May 22, Burleigg will discuss Aristotle's "Rhetoric," which places the discipliner of public speaking in the context of otherintellectuao pursuits. Mercantile Library Executive Director Albert Pyle said the seriez aims to serve members whoare businesspeople. "Thids is a literary center," he said. "Butg literary covers a big, wide field."
